1997-98 was an interesting year. The national and California economies were improving in spite of El Nino and the recession in Japan. California did not flood but Florida burned and President Clinton's visit to China promised to be historic. In your local chapter, membership is steady and chapter activities were well supported. The speakers at our meetings were from diverse backgrounds and they spoke on a wide range of interesting topics. The chapter also offered support in George Binczewski's effort to have the town of Heroult (under Lake Shasta) declared a National Historic Site, the first such site on the west coast. Heroult was the first place the Heroult process (aka Hall process) was used. The Heroult process is an electrically driven extraction technique that is widely used on aluminum but in this case it was used on iron ore! Sadly, Earl Parker died on May 9. He was 85. Earl was a long-term member of this chapter and was very involved in its activities.
Below is a summary of your chapter's activities for 1997/98. We have compiled the main features of each chapter meeting along with the winners of various awards, other activities and events which took place outside of regular meetings, the names of persons serving on the executive committee as well as other persons and organizations that played a prominent role in this year's activities.
