Education

Metallurgy of Welding and Joining Course

This course was organized by Lawrence Cheung and taught by Lawrence, Gary Schmidt, Richard Seals, and Ron Schokley.  It met each Monday from June 16 through September 2, 2003 at the ChevronTexaco Richmond Technology Center.  The course began with an introduction, a brief history, and a review of the terminology, then went on to cover basic metallurgy and manufacturing methods, welding fundamentals, welding carbon and low-alloy steels, welding stainless steels, welding nickel-based and other non-ferrous alloys, joining of dissimilar metals, hard-facing, inspection techniques, and repair methods.  The course was well-received and highly regarded by all who attended.

Events

John Dorn Award: This award is given to a Ph.D. student in the last year of his or her studies.  This year the award went to Nathan Mara - U. C. Davis

Scholastic Achievement Award: This award is given to outstanding students from U. C. Berkeley and U. C. Davis. This year awards were given to: Nick Degnan and Dat Quach - U. C. Davis

Outstanding Community College Student Awards
This award is given to outstanding students in academic and technical programs at regional community colleges. Two nominations from each school are considered. This year the awards were given to:

Membership Awards: Each year at the end of our season we recognize the various achievements of members from our chapter.  This year the following awards were presented during the June meeting:
