Chapter MembershipThe June 2004 membership database from the national office of ASM International showed that we had a total of 420 members, making us one of the larger chapters in the United States. We have analyzed the membership roster and have been able to offer the following breakdown. Membership in our chapter consists of:
Note that many of our retired members are life members. Our membership roster includes:
and among the affiliations (top 20 in terms of number of members) are:
How long have people be members of our ASM International? The chart below shows the answer. Note the recent surge in membership, and also the fact that several people have been members for over 70 years!
We have seen a net loss in the number of members in our chapter, down 113 since 1999 (about 18 per year), but we have also seen a surge in the number of new members, 122 having been members of ASM International for less than 5 years, 46 of those having joined within the past year. We're not sure what is causing the recent increase, but we'll be keeping an eye on it. One sign of change is the fact that 60.0% of our members have provided email addresses to ASM, up considerably from 37.9% in 1999 and 14% in 1997. Perhaps it is significant that 65% of our members are individual, student, and sustaining members while 35% are life or retired members. Finally, not all of our members live in California. We also have two living in Oregon, two in Nevada, two in Colorado, one in Missouri, one in Idaho, and even one in Nigeria. We contacted the person in Nigeria and he does get our newsletters and meeting announcements, but it is unlikely he'll be attending a chapter meeting.
ASM FellowsIn 1969 ASM International established the honor of Fellow of the Society to recognize members for distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering and to develop a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the society. Your local chapter's membership includes a number of Fellows. They are:
Sustaining MembersSustaining members are companies, and possibly individuals, who chose to join as institutional supporters of your local chapter. They are regular members in all other respects except that they contribute a higher membership fee than individuals, a portion of which is returned directly to your chapter to fund the academic awards and other programs. Below is a listing, in alphabetical order, of the sustaining members. We would like to sincerely thank them for their interest in and continued support of our chapter.
