Our region is home to a number of major universities and colleges that
offer programs in materials science, engineering, technology, and related
disciplines. These include three internationally known research
universities, highly regarded teaching universities, and a number of
colleges in California's community college system (the largest single school
system in the world). So whether you are looking for a school to
attend, researchers to collaborate with, or students to hire, the
information provided here should help you get in touch with the materials
programs on these campuses.
Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo
Department of Materials Engineering While Cal-Poly is one of the largest accredited materials
engineering programs in the United States, it has the feel of a small
private college. With a student-to-faculty ratio of ~20:1, our 128 students
are known by name and learn side-by-side with our faculty in the laboratory.
Our students often praise the family atmosphere, the camaraderie among their
MatE majors and the caring faculty.

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and
Manufacturing Technology
The Department is the home to three accredited bachelor of science degree
programs -- Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Manufacturing
Technology, and Minor in Manufacturing. The Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering Programs are
accredited by
ABET. The Manufacturing Technology Program is accredited by the
National Association of Industrial Technology
(NAIT).

Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering
Graduates of our department find jobs in Silicon
Valley and beyond, working as process engineers, failure analysis engineers,
manufacturing engineers, plant engineers, as well as in research and
development. Our graduates can be found in all kinds of industrial sectors,
including semiconductors and microelectronics, biotech and pharmaceuticals,
environmental remediation, health and safety as well as in traditional
industries such as petroleum processing and metallurgy. Many of our
students go onto graduate schools all over the country.
We offer Bachelors
Degrees in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and General
Engineering Concentrations in Microelectronics Process Engineering and
Environmental Health and Safety Engineering. We offer Masters
Degrees in Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering, and
often advise students in the
Master of Science in Engineering program. We also offer a Minor in
Materials Engineering.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science The materials science program at U. C. Davis offers bachelors,
masters and doctorate degrees in materials science and engineering.
Double-majors in chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering are
also available. The undergraduate program focuses on the fundamentals
(education for a lifetime) with an emphasis in the senior year on design and
solving real-world materials problems. The graduate program offers one the opportunity to work in the areas of creep
and superplasticity of metals and ceramics; fracture and fatigue in alloys,
composites and bone; plasma-activated sintering, fuel cells, advanced
techniques in electron microscopy (HR-TEM, EELS) and more.

Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering UNR offers the B.S. degree in Materials Science and
Engineering, and has an option in Extractive Metallurgy. We also offer M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering. Our internationally
recognized faculty are leaders in education, research, and national
organizations. All are committed to our undergraduate students and program.
Our courses are taught by the faculty, not by teaching assistants, and
course sections are small. You will get to know the faculty and your fellow
engineering students in a small group atmosphere, and develop professional
relationships that could last a lifetime.

College of Marin The College of Marin offers all of the lower division coursework required for
transfer into most of California's colleges and universities, in nearly
all disciplines of engineering. In addition to general math and science
curriculum, the Engineering program offers introductory courses in
graphics, mechanics, electrical circuit analysis, and materials science.
Previous alumni of the College have successfully obtained B.S., M.S., and
Ph.D. degrees in a variety of different fields of engineering, including
Materials Science and Engineering.

Los Positas College
Welcome to the Las Positas College website. I am Gill Cruz, P.E., the
Engineering Transfer Program Chair for the department. Las Positas
College offers a dedicated engineering transfer program that delivers
the engineering courses you will need to transfer to a four year
institution. Our transfer students are successfully attending and
graduating from universities such as Cal Poly, U.C. Davis, San Jose State,
U.C. Berkeley, Sacramento State, UCLA, and University of Pacific. For more
information please visit the engineering website and the Las Positas
College home page.
